A Distinguished History

Matcha green tea drank by zen buddhist monks
Matcha was introduced to Japan over 800 years ago and was drank by Buddhist Monks and Samurai Warriors

Matcha green tea was introduced in Japan in the late 1100's (over 800 years ago!) by a renowned Buddhist monk, Eisai Myoan. Buddhist monks were the first to adopt Matcha Green Tea in a ritual like fashion. They drank Matcha daily to help them calm themselves mentally prior to meditation, but it also provided them with a mild, long-lasting energy boost that helped them retain focus throughout long periods of meditation and focus.

During the 13th century, Samurai Warriors learned the fine art of Matcha brewing from Zen Buddhist Monks. The Samurai learned that drinking Matcha would help them better meditate before battle, as well as provide the long-lasting energy boost and increase in physical endurance they needed to claim victory in long, drawn out battles. Matcha has become intertwined in Japanese culture. It is considered an integral part of providing the essence and soul of the entire country. Throughout history Monks, Warriors, and Japanese Royalty have enjoyed the sweet, vegetal taste and noble aroma of Matcha Green Tea as part of their daily routines. Order Now >>

Ancient Growing Techniques

KaiMatcha Premium is shade grown
Our Matcha is prepared using ancient techniques which include being shade grown, hand picked, steam dryed, and stone ground

KaiMatcha Green Tea is grown on a large, family-owned farm located in the rolling hills of Uji, in the ancient city of Kyoto, Japan. For more than 800 years, Uji has been the epicenter of Matcha Green Tea cultivation and culture. KaiMatcha is grown close to the river, where the soil is very fertile. Our name pays hommage to this fact as the word "Kai" refers to ocean and water. This rich, fertile soil near the river banks creates the characteristic mellow and deep taste of our refreshing Matcha Green Tea.

KaiMatcha is carefully grown in the shade for 20 to 30 days before harvest. By being shaded from the sunlight we can enhance the noble aroma of the tea, and increase it's natural chlorophyll, antioxident, and phytonutrient content. Our skilled workers then hand-pick only the best green tea leaves from the top of the plants. The leaves are then steamed, dried, and prepared for grinding. We still use the traditional granite grinding stone to ensure the entire green tea leaf has been finely ground to produce Matcha. It takes 1 hour of stone grinding to produce enough Matcha Green Tea powder for 1 30 gram tin of KaiMatcha Premium. Order Now >>
